Roof Beam Failure
When dry rot is found in a roof beam, it should never be ignored. Like the decay in a tooth, once it is established, it will spread. If left unchecked, the rot can spread throughout the beam and into adjacent framing. In severe cases, localized structural failure (crush or collapse of the framing members) under the weight of the roof can occur.
Dry rot induced roof beam failure. In this case, the rotten beam was crushed by the roof load. This is why merely cutting back a dry rotted beam isn't a solution. The dry rot spread into the fascia, which led to its failure as well.
